Das Kinderkrankenhaus * The Children’s Hospital

uk24 At the beginning of the 20th century, infant mortality was rising in the German Reich, while the birth rate was declining. Because of this, many children’s hospitals were built.

Construction of the hospital in Berlin-Weissensee was started in 1909, in 1911 it was inaugurated. Around the buildings, a small recreational park was built, and a cow shed and dairy building was added, for „milk treatment“ of the kids. The hospital was considered one of the best in the Reich and was promoted to a training center. It was in use throughout the century and was modernized and altered numerous times. In 1985, an additional building was built that was opened in 1987.

On January 1st, 1997, the hospital was shut down and stood vacant since then. In 2005, the whole area was sold to a russian investor, who said he would establish a cancer hospital. But nothing happened, and the buildings decayed more and more. In spring 2015, the russians were expropriated and the hospital was given back to the city of Berlin. But now, everything is too late. Vandals and metal thieves have destroyed the buildings, so they can only be razed. In 2013 alone, there were 17 cases of arson in the hospital.

Note: there are lots and lots of articles about this location on the internet, it does’nt make sense to keep it secret here.
