* Mausoleum Z *

uk24 Sometimes, you get hands on information about an abandoned location, without any research work. This time, a friend sent me a mail. She wrote something like „I know you’re in the region, why not have a look at this mausoleum, it’s just a 30 minutes drive for you!“

The mausoleum stands amidst a dense forest, more or less left to its own. It was built in 1897. Only one man was buried here. He was an nobleman and the last of his family tree, as he was never married. When he died, a foundation inherited all his money. The purpose of the foundation was to maintain the mausoleum with the surrounding park for the future. After the economic crisis with its hyper-inflation in the 1920s, most of the money was gone, so only minimal work was conducted for keeping the place in shape. Subsequently, with the end of World War 2, nobody was left to take care of the building, as the foundation was cut off from the mausoleum by the German division in West and East.

The park is barely recognizable, everything is completely overgrown. In the late 1990s, the county administration ordered conservation of the mausoleum to slow the advancing decay. They also implemented a 12 foot fence behind the wooden doors to hinder vandals and tomb raiders, and protected the colorful windows with wired glass on the outside. Since then, nothing more happened, and this beautiful building sits lonely in the woods again.

Stadtbad B. * Indoor Pool B.

uk24 The pool was built between 1928 and 1930 as part of a larger building complex. Next to the pool building, there’s an office building and a sports hall. A school was also planned, but not built due to the rising world economic crisis of these years.

According to the Bauhaus style, the pool was masoned using red bricks. Inside, there’s a really colorful design. The entrance was designed in brownish colors, the pool hall boasts yellow and turquoise. The therapeutic bath wing also shows turquoise lining, and roof windows let the sun in.

In 2000, the pool was shutdown. After that, it was used for some exhibitions. This was also the cause for the construction of a guardrail around the empty pool, so visitors would not fall down there.

While the other parts of the ensemble have been renovated and are in new use again, the pool still sits vacant. There are some plans of converting it into an apartment building. The advancing decay is obvious. One of the staircases had to be braced with wood beams to avoid collapsing. The boiler room in the basement is flooded 2 feet deep. Also, there were vandals and metal thieves going in and out. Meanwhile, the building has been sealed and put under surveillance by the city council.

I want to thank my good friend Y. who made this legal visit possible 🙂
